LEVEL 1 GRAND CHAMPS

LEVEL 2 GRAND CHAMPS

‘No more Battle curse’ being the saying all comp weekend.

Little back story- Battle was known as the worst competition every year since the very very beginning. Most years it was the gastro bug at the convention center that wiped everyone out but other years entailed major time delays due to athletes falling off the stage, shoes & hair pieces falling out or flying off stage, dislocated/ broken bones, athletes and coaches learning entire routines back stage with 30 minutes until they performed and most recently the competition shutting down in the middle of the day with 3 hours to get home before lock down began and sadly the list went on…

2022 battle will go down in FX history and let me tell you it feels incredible to beat the Battle Curse once and for all!

What does cheer mean to me?

What does cheer mean to me?

Hi, my name is Brooke and I’m have been a part of the cheer world for over 13 years. As you can probably tell cheer has been a very significant part of my life and my love for the sport continues to grow every single year. I started Cheerleading back when I was just 6 years old, I was on a mini team with 6 other girls and that was it. Ever since my first tryouts and training session I fell in love with the atmosphere. I did cheer all throughout primary school, high school, and now university, it was tough with all the workload, but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Cheer for me has always been my safe place, where I can go, have fun and be myself without feeling judged or pressured to be someone I’m not. Cheer made me a much better and stronger person, teammate, and athlete. It taught me so many life skill that I would never of gotten without becoming a cheerleader. I was wanted and needed on a team and that team relied on me. Becoming a cheer coach has been my dream since I first started cheering. The day I became a coach was the happiest day of my life, my dreams and goals had finally come true. I still remember the day Miranda and Karen asked me to teach a flight school class for the very first time, I have never felt so much excitement and nervousness all at the same time. I now understand how much I value my coaches and what they did for me. They had a massive impact on my life, not only within the gym but also in my personal life. I can’t wait to be that coach to somebody else, someone they look up to and value as a person. Being a coach is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life and makes me so happy to see all those kids smile. This sport is continuously growing because of the great atmosphere and friends we create through the year. Cheerleading will forever be a part of my life and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Stretching! Is it really that Important?

Stretching? Is it really that important? By Dustin Lowrey

The simple answer to this question is- YES! To be at the top of our sport- which is a goal we hope to inspire in all our athletes at Cheer FX, takes not only strength (both mental and physical) but FLEXIBILITY. Those are the two champion ingredients individual athletes must possess in order to make that climb to the top.

Now, with the current state of the world not allowing us to go out, we are redefining normal. In this new virtual normal- we may be taking a break from the gym but we are not taking a break from discipline. Stretching is one of the most important things your young athlete should be doing right now. There are multiple reasons stretching should be not only a regular part of your daily routine, but stretching should be COOL in your house! I want to focus on three key points right now. Firstly, flexibility is crucial to your athletes progression as an individual athlete, second- flexibility separates divisions from champion’s circle to everyone else, and lastly, coming back from this break from CFX HQ, we will see very clearly who used their time the wisest and made the most of this break. It will be clear who the athletes are that want to be at the top of the pack when we return to normal life.

Our sport is so heavily reliant on strong fundamentals! Having a 180 split all the way down should be considered fundamental in your home. Coming from me, that is the bare-bones minimum. Our sport is very rep intensive, and takes daily disciplines to get to where we need to be. Flexibility and daily work is crucial in order to be strong and resilient to injury- in turn allowing for more reps to completed in the long run. Not only does your cheerleader need to be strong enough to hit and hold shapes to create powerful tumbling, but they need to be flexible enough in order to pass through these shapes easily.

Put your arms straight up in the air right now! If your elbows don’t naturally stretch past your ears- you need to work on your flexibility.

The shapes we hit in cheerleading should be comfortable and not forced. If you are uncomfortable stretching, then you need to stretch more. Nothing is comfortable or enjoyable when it’s new. The good news is- being flexible takes no talent- only hard work and the discipline to stretch every day.

Let’s move into our next point! As we saw at the NCA All-Star National Championship (the worlds largest cheerleading competition), flexibility and technique separated entire divisions. Technique is not stylized, one program may do a set of skills one way, and another program may do the same set of skills a completely different way. However, one thing that is uniform across all of cheerleading- is how we stretch! Although our top girls may pull a body position differently from another team, their fundamental flexibility and hyper flexibility is the same. When studying divisions at the All-Star National Championship and going back and reviewing video from the most competitive of these divisions, if I had to pick one factor that made the biggest difference- it easily would come down to flexibility. The programs that rose to the top of their divisions across all levels were the programs whose focus was on fundamentals and more importantly- flexibility.

A notable team to watch- Zodiac All-Stars Shadow from the UK. This is an international team that is currently blazing a trail straight to the champions circle. Watching this team, it is very clear that flexibility is of the utmost importance within the four walls of their gym.

Lastly, becoming flexible by todays standards takes discipline like I have said earlier. You know what else takes a lot of discipline? Achieving anything great. Again, being flexible takes no talent- just the determination and daily habit forming in order to achieve your goals. Discipline is defined by “small ritualistic habits formed in order to lead to mental or physical training.” Small. Ritualist. Habits. When I was still an athlete and not just coaching, I stretched at least 3 times a day, outside of practice. Remember about three paragraphs ago when I said a full split is the bare minimum? Let’s just let that sink in again. If you are stretching correctly every day, you will begin to understand why that is the bare minimum. If you are already there, good job! Now lets push further and work towards the goal of hyper flexibility!

It’s no secret that most of us have a lot of time on our hand. Don’t be that girl to come back off this break and not have all of her splits down. Stretch like it is your job! There are so many benefits to being flexible, and there are no excuses not to come off this quarantine with champion flexibility! Mum, dad, athlete, dog (shout-out to the pups that make appearances during stretching time during Zoom classes), everyone! Happy stretching!

My Experience by Kaitlyn Bensley

Cheerleading was always something I was in awe of when I was younger and it was something I knew I wanted to try. So, when I finally found CheerFX I knew that I wanted to start as soon as possible. As a 10 year old in 2014, I started with nothing more than a cartwheel and handstand. But within days I had been put on a team that was exactly my level. I had learnt new skills, made so many new friends and was ready to make Cheerleading my passion. From days, to weeks, to months and now years and I will never regret a single second of any of it. I’ve learnt so many incredible skills, moved up 4 different levels, got to experience many different teams, go from a base to a flyer and back again, and developed a love for this amazing sport.

So many people assume cheerleading is waving pom poms around and cheering on sports team, but competitive cheer is so much more than that. We work hard to learn creative routines full of stunting, jumps, tumble and dance that are meant to wow the judges while we perform on stage. Cheerleading is a world wide sport and is becoming more popular every year with multiple competitions involving teams and gyms from all over the globe.

Trainings at CheerFX are hard work and are constant lessons of improving and learning. When you put your time and full effort into training you will always get something out of it. From the beginning of the year while you’re learning the new and unique choreography designed by coaches, to the very end while you’re training your heart out for nationals, you’re always guaranteed to be working hard each lesson and improving in every aspect. From tumble to, flight school, to dance, to cheer trainings; there is so much time and effort put in from everyone involved to create giant improvements over time.

When it comes to competitions, they are full of energy and involve so much encouragement and nervous excitement. There’s something so special about being able to perform something you’re so proud of and worked hours on with all your best friends on stage, while also looking your best in full glam. In 2017 I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to compete at NCA, the biggest cheerleading competition in the world that is held in Dallas Texas. Myself and the rest of my team; Sub Zero, worked all of our Christmas holidays to perfect our routine which we then flew to America to compete, which ended up getting us second place. This was by far my most memorable and of my most life changing Cheerleading experiences and something I will never forget (along with all the crazy memories we made).

Cheerleading has brought me some of my closest friends of all ages from all over, and even those who don’t cheer anymore will always still be close. Team work and trust is so important to have in cheer and after spending so much time with your team mates, friendship comes easy and so fast. My cheer friends are so close to me and definitely one of the most rewarding parts of cheerleading in general and over time you develop an unbreakable bond. After growing up with such a positive and encouraging atmosphere I’ve turned from a quiet little kid to a loud and encouraging team member who always needs to make herself known throughout training. While coaches are hard on you or your teams at times, they are always there for you and want to help you succeed through everything, all the time.

Cheer brings you so many opportunities and feelings of accomplishment. From the winning of a competition, to being able to travel the world to comps, to finally getting that skill you’ve been working on, to achieving an award at the end of the year or cor just being able to keep fit all year long. The opportunities are seriously endless and it brings you so much happiness and person gain.

After 5 years at CheerFX I’ve made so many life long friendships, traveled across the world, been handed so many opportunities and become who I am today and a better person in general. It is my home away from home and a place I can go that I know I will always be loved and accepted. It has impacted my life forever and I am forever thankful for my coaches, friends and on going support while cheering. My love for this sport will continue to grow over many more years. If you’ve ever wanted to try cheerleading, definitely give it a shot. It is so worth it and something you can absolutely fall in love with.

With love, Bensley xx
